Fostering Telecom Lifecycle Management Support Below The Executive Level: Part II

A successful Telecom Lifecycle Management (TLM) program requires full buy-in across all functions and levels of a company. The more touch points you can make by showing how the program will benefit stakeholders, the easier it will be to get all oars rowing in the same direction.

In my last blog post, I discussed the needs of the end-user community. In my second post, I will wrap up with the needs of Accounts Payable (AP)/Finance and Telecom/IT professionals that can be satisfied by a properly implemented TLM program, with a focus on mobile devices.

ACCOUNTS PAYABLE & FINANCE PROFESSIONALS

AP/Finance professionals are under considerable pressure to control costs, accurately allocate charges to the appropriate GL and cost center, and get bills paid on time. This job function also tends to have the following 6 responsibilities:

  1. Accruing for expected charges at the end of financial periods
  2. Providing expense visibility to cost center owners
  3. Managing cash flow
  4. Accurately predicting accruals at the end of each financial period
  5. Performing financial and compliance audits
  6. Completing numerous financial analyses

Tracking mobile devices to particular employees and cost centers is a unique challenge for AP professionals. Comptrollers in particular are great allies here, as they are about control and visibility, which is exactly what a good Telecom Lifecycle Management program offers.

TELECOM & IT PROFESSIONALS

With the exception of budgets, Telecom/IT professionals are concerned with a different set of challenges related to designing and maintaining the network at the very top. While this list seems small compared to that of AP/Finance, it encompasses a large range of functionality:

  1. Ensuring the accuracy of charges
  2. Providing a detailed inventory by site, vendor and service
  3. Tracking of all telecom contracts
  4. Identifying opportunities to reduce expenses and increase efficiencies
  5. Providing the business intelligence necessary to analyze the potential cost impact of new technologies and proposed contracts
  6. Tracking of issues for holistic vendor management

Mobile devices offer several unique challenges for IT including:

  1. Maintaining security and access to corporate data from a large number of highly portable devices
  2. Enforcing corporate policies around compliance and acceptable use
  3. Unpredictable bandwidth demands at corporate facilities that provide wi-fi connectivity to employees and customers

If you are selling a Telecom Lifecycle Management program as a vendor or simply attempting to get one launched within your own organization, knowing who you need to get on board and what would motivate them to join the team can make the difference between a successful TLM program and one that creates more pain for everyone than it solves.
